How much does SEO cost for a small business?

Updated · November 2, 2026

In the best-known poll of 439 SEO providers, the most common monthly retainer is $501 to $1,000, while freelancers average about $1,349 and agencies about $3,209. In Europe, published ranges for small businesses mostly run from €400 to €2,500 a month. Doing it yourself costs no money, only time. A small budget buys only a few hours a month, so what matters is what those hours go on.

SEO cost at a glance

These are published figures, checked on 2 November 2026, before tax. The Ahrefs poll was last updated in August 2024 and the SE Ranking survey dates from December 2024, so read them as reference points, not as quotes.

  • The averages hide a wide spread. Ahrefs found that about 42% of providers charge $250 to $1,000 a month, and that very small businesses with basic needs can pay less than the usual range.
  • The two surveys sampled different people: 78% of SE Ranking's respondents were agencies with under 10 people, which is why its numbers are lower.
  • Most providers work on a monthly retainer: 78.2% in the Ahrefs poll.

We found no independent 2026 survey for European countries. These are published ranges, mostly from SEO sellers, so treat them as a first orientation and ask for three quotes.

What your monthly budget buys in hours

SEO is mostly paid time, so the clearest way to read a quote is to turn it into hours. This table divides each budget by the Ahrefs averages. It is our arithmetic, rounded, and you can repeat it with any rate you are quoted.

For scale, Orbit Media's 2026 survey puts an average blog post at 3 hours 20 minutes. At $500 a month, two articles would use the whole budget, with nothing left for anything else.

What a small budget can't buy

A few hours a month are useful if you spend them on one thing. They won't stretch to everything an SEO proposal usually lists, and a very low price leaves only three possible explanations: less work, less experienced work, or automated work.

  • It can't cover technical work, regular content and outreach all at once. Pick the one that is holding you back.
  • It can't compete nationally on broad phrases. A small budget fits local searches and specific questions better: "physiotherapist for shoulder pain in Leeds", not "physiotherapy".
  • It shouldn't buy links. Google's spam policies treat exchanging money for links meant to manipulate rankings as link spam, so a cheap "100 backlinks" package is a risk, not a shortcut.
  • It can't buy a position. Google says plainly that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking, and tells you to walk away from anyone who does.
  • It can't buy a date. Google says some changes take effect in hours and others take several months.

What you can do for free first

Some of the most useful work costs nothing, and these basics are worth doing before you pay anyone. A consultant who starts from them will also spend your hours on harder problems.

  1. Set up Search Console, Google's free service that shows what people search before they reach you and which pages have problems.
  2. Create or claim your Business Profile. Listing your business on Google is free, and it comes first if your customers are local.
  3. Check whether Google can find you at all, with why a website doesn't show up on Google.
  4. Run through the free website audit checklist and fix what you can. If you get stuck, you now have a precise list to give to a professional.
  5. Write down the questions customers ask you, and answer them with these post ideas for local businesses. You can test a draft with the free SEO article analyzer.

How much should a small business spend on SEO?

Start from what a customer is worth, not from a price list. Multiply the monthly fee by 12, then divide by the profit from one customer. That tells you how many extra customers SEO must bring in during the year to pay for itself.

At $1,000 a month, the year costs $12,000. With $200 profit per customer you need 60 customers, which is a lot for a small local business. With $2,000 profit per customer you need 6. This sizes the bet, it is not a forecast: nobody can say in advance how many customers SEO will bring. See how to get customers from Google for how the channel works.

If the sum doesn't work, buy less rather than start and stop. One-off help can be enough: a project for the main fixes, then content you produce yourself. Often the largest line is content, so compare it with what a business blog costs. If the site itself is the problem, how much a website costs may be the better question.

What to ask before you sign

Google's own advice on hiring an SEO calls it a big decision, because an irresponsible provider can damage your site and reputation. It suggests asking for examples of previous work, and asking what results to expect, in what timeframe and how success is measured. Four more questions make quotes comparable:

  • How many hours a month does this fee buy, and who does the work?
  • What exactly will you do in the first three months?
  • Do I keep the content, the accounts and the data if I leave?
  • How long is the contract, and how do I end it?

Frequently asked questions

›How much does SEO cost per month?

The most common retainer in Ahrefs' poll of 439 providers is $501 to $1,000 a month, with freelancers averaging about $1,349 and agencies about $3,209. Published European ranges for small businesses mostly run from €400 to €2,500.

›Is $500 a month enough for SEO?

It can be, for one local business with one clear priority. At the Ahrefs averages it buys about 5 to 7 hours, roughly two articles, so don't expect a full programme.

›How much does an SEO audit cost?

It varies with the size of the site. In Germany, freelancermap estimates 640 to 1,600 euros for a typical audit of 8 to 20 hours. For a first pass, the free checklist costs nothing.

›Can I do SEO myself?

Yes, for the basics. Google says you usually don't need to do anything except publish your site for it to be found, and treats hiring a professional as an option. Your time is the cost.

›How long does SEO take to work?

There is no fixed date. Google says some changes take effect in a few hours and others can take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging a change.

›Does Uisdom do SEO?

Uisdom writes and publishes articles based on your site, 3 a week for €29.99 a month, and the first one is free. It covers content, not links or consulting, and it does not promise rankings.
